Neal, along with all the other writers in the entertainment industry has gone on strike. This means that he can't write for, or communicate with the studios. Among other things, the writers are striking for a fair share of royalties from internet downloads. Writers earn 2.5 cents per dollar on TV reruns. The studios want writers to accept 1/3 of one cent per dollar they earn on internet downloads. Writers don't feel that s fair!
Everlost has sold to Universal Studios, with Gary Ross's company "Larger than Life" producing, and Neal writing the script. At this stage, the first draft of the script is done, and Neal is waiting for rewrite notes from the studio. Neal is thrilled to be working with "Larger than Life", and is looking forward to getting Everlost up on the big screen.
Shortly before the strike, Neal signed a contract to write an original Disney Channel movie, (although he's contractually bound not to discuss the subject matter). Work on the script will begin once the strike is over.
"Class Act," a script co-written by Neal Shusterman and Eric Elfman for Revolution Studios has been picked up by Dreamworks. Hallie Berry is attached to star, and Doug Atchison (Akeelah and the Bee) will be directing.
The Disney Channel is happy with Neal's script adaptation of his novel Downsiders. They own the film and TV rights now, and can make it at any time, assuming they can get together a cast they like, and can budget it. No telling whether it will get made sooner, or later, but it's a favorite project over at the Disney Channel... so let's hope it gets made soon!
There's an offer on the table to do the "Darkness Creeping" short story collections as a TV series. More on that as we know more...
