The release of BREAK TO YOU is both liberating and bittersweet. Bittersweet, because one of my collaborators, Debra Young lost her battle with Lupus just a few months before publication. I’m glad this book can be a part of her legacy. Michelle and I are proud to have written it with her.
Also instead of visiting schools for the accompanying book tour, I decided to visit juvenile detention centers – because BREAK TO YOU deals with the systemic and heart-wrenching nature of the juvenile justice system. My hope was to make the kids who would identify most with Adriana and Jon feel seen, believed in, and remember that their future is still ahead of them.
While BREAK TO YOU could be considered a romance, I always try to write stories that transcend genre. And while romance is often marketed to girls, my personal goal was to craft a romance that would be equally appealing to boys. With a strong female character in Adriana, and a strong male character in Jon, it strikes a balance that is already reaching a broad audience.
