Unwind Movie Update—July 2015

I’m pleased to let everyone know that Unwind is moving closer to production! Constantin Films has slated the film for production in April 2016, with Roger Avary directing. The script, written by Roger and Gala Avary, is being fine-tuned, and the opening teaser is currently being filmed to be shown at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and American Film Market (AFM). The casting process for the main characters has just begun (more on casting to come).

Roger Avary is a filmmaker, writer, producer, and director perhaps best known for writing Pulp Fiction with Quentin Tarantino, and for his 2002 adaption of The Rules of Attraction. He’s also behind Silent Hill (2006) and Beowulf (2007), the latter of which he co-wrote with Neil Gaiman. Gala, Roger’s daughter and writing partner for Unwind, is an up-and-coming screenwriter and actor.

Everyone is extremely enthusiastic at this point, and I can truly say it was worth the wait! Look for more news about Unwind soon.

By the way, in case you missed it, there will be a fifth book in the Dystology out later this year! UnBound is a short story collection set before, during, and after Undivided. Click here for more info.

I’m a actor, well at least I want to be if it’s in Alberta count me in! I love unwind and want to the whole world to love it, like twilight fans I’ll be the one with the poorly drawn poster and all the books. Although creepy, I would love to be a part of it. I’m brown (Pantone 71-4 C) or what you would call tanned Caucasian. So I can’t really be a main but a side character would be life.

  11. Ирина says:

    Super

  12. Anna says:

Eek! I’m soooooooooooooooooooooooooo excited!!! The unwind book series is definitely one of my favourites (along with Harry Potter of course) I’m really looking forward to it becoming a movie! I have a feeling it will turn out like the Hunger games or the Maze Runner or even Harry Potter! With EVERYONE (well, 99.99999% of people) loving it! I’m looking forward to threatening people with spoilers unless they read the books first, as so much of the book is lost when they become movies!!! I can’t wait!!!

    • Tedi says:

i couldn’t agree more Anna I’m so excited ah !

      • Tricia says:

I can’t wait for this movie to come out. I just finished the last book and it was incredible!! You made this world seem so real in the way you wrote it. You made me laugh and even cry and it’s been a really long time since a book has made me feel this strongly. Thank you for a truly incredible series!! Now I can’t wait for the movies!!

        • Neal says:

Thanks for you post, Tricia! I’m glad you enjoyed the book. I particularly love when people tell me how much they like UNDIVIDED, as series can be disappointing in the end. To know that the Unwind Dystology holds up right through the last page makes me feel good all over! The film is moving forward – more news when I get the go-ahead to post it!

          • Mary says:

Everything seems to have been going stagnant for a while, and so I’m glad things are still going on. I’m really exited, I read all of the books in about a week and bought UnBound the day it came out!

          • Trevin says:

I wanna act as Connor so bad. His appearance fits me. Even my hair. Like that one time when Roland makes a comment about Connor’s hair being like a mop.
            Well, dreams are dreams.

  13. tedi winn says:

I’m just curious, but will the scenes from Ohio be actually filmed in Ohio?

  35. Mary says:

    Hi Mr. Shusterman,
I am very excited about the Unwind movie! I know you have been asked many questions about open casting and I don’t want to ask about that again, but I was just wondering if you think (if there was open casting) that you would consider going to Washington, D.C.? Thank you and congratulations again on the movie!

  36. Chris says:

Been waiting for years for this movie. I remember you coming to my school back in 2013 talking about it. Can’t wait for the project to finally move forward!

  37. Emerald says:

Hello Mr. Shusterman. My name is Emerald Chaney, and I am a huge fan of your Unwind dystology. I was wondering if you could keep me posted on the casting process, and if there is a chance that I could audition for a role. I am a model hoping to be an actress, and this would be a great experience for me and to start my career. I sent an email to the people in charge of casting, and haven’t heard anything yet. Just whenever you get a chance, it would be awesome to hear from you. Thank you for your time, and have a great day.

  38. Dipannita says:

Honestly, the Unwind books have completely ruined my life because the characters and their stories are so perfect. It has completely raised my standards and expectations for life, and I am so disappointed in everything around me that it’s not more like the Unwind world. Can we just have a Heartland War already?
I sort of don’t want a movie to happen because it would ruin how I see the characters in my head, the mental image, but if there had to be, the only person I can see as Connor Lassiter is Finn Harries…who’s a Youtuber…but he’s literally the ONLY person I can see as Connor!
For the casting, please don’t cast someone too old for Connor, or too young or old for Lev. MAKE CONNOR, LEV, AND RISA LOOK THEIR PERSONALITIES!!!

  39. Dakota says:

Hi Mr. Shusterman, I was just wondering if there is a release date for the movie yet?

  40. Hein Muller says:

I would love to be in the cast although I live in Australia. I’m a 13 year old boy with blonde hair and slightly tan skin. This would be a great opportunity to start my acting career.

  41. Phoebe LaMountain says:

I’m so excited for this movie and can’t wait for the release date!

  42. Shea says:

Hi! I feel like I may be bugging you, so sorry in advance! But I hope that you properly cast teenagers to be the main characters as so many movies now a days have teenagers depicted by adults which lowers teenagers already low self esteem. Adults don’t seem to deal with multiple problems that a teen actor may have such as acne, which would make them more relate-able to the viewers. I don’t mean to be telling you how to cast, I just was hopping that us teenagers will be properly represented. And if its not too much, and you are still looking, I was wondering if there would be auditions for Risa Ward. As she is my role model. And I know that just looking like her wont be enough, as personalities do matter, so you are the judge, but it would mean the world to me if I could just audition. If not I would be interested in assisting in any other part you have to offer that I may look like. I could potentially be an extra as well, but auditioning would mean the world to me. And I don’t expect a reply as I know you are busy, but maybe if you could? Your books are sometimes like my lifeline, I refer to them constantly as well and you are one of my favorite authors. I have read all five books countless times. Thank you so much for even reading this.

  43. Trinity Artis says:

OMG.I cannot wait till the move comes out. I’ve been reading the books with me sister, and she loved it so much.

  44. Tammy Bourne says:

Any recent news on the movie?? Did it get filmed?

  45. Mikayla says:

Hi Neal! Super excited to hear about the movie. I read in an article that filming is going to take place in Manitoba, which is the province i live in – will there be an opportunity for fans (no acting experience) to become extras in the film? I’ve been a fan for many years and would love to participate 🙂

  46. Katie says:

Still waiting for at least an update. I want to see this movie so badly. PLZ HURRY AND TELL ME WHEN I CAN FINALLY SEE IT

  47. Andy says:

unwind is one of my favorite series and
I can’t wait for the movie!
